Start with the roof
An unshaded south-facing roof usually offers strong generation, but east- and west-facing arrays can also perform well by spreading output across the day. Shade, roof shape, dormers and chimneys can reduce the usable area.
The roof should be in suitable condition before panels are installed. If significant roof work is likely soon, completing it first may avoid the cost of removing and reinstalling the array.
Match generation to how you use electricity
Your annual consumption is useful, but timing matters too. Homes that use more electricity during daylight hours can consume a larger share of their solar generation directly.
Future changes such as an electric vehicle, heat pump or working from home should be included in the design conversation.
Decide whether to include a battery
A battery can move daytime generation into the evening, but it adds cost and has its own usable capacity, power limits, warranty and expected lifespan. The decision should be based on consumption patterns and tariffs rather than assuming every solar system needs one.
Permissions and connection
Domestic rooftop solar is often permitted development, but exceptions can apply to listed buildings, conservation areas and unusual installations. The distribution network operator may also need to be notified or approve the connection; the installer normally handles this process.
